Why are students getting weak in English?
As far as my experience is concerned the answer to this question lies in the fact that English language teachers as well as the language learners focus on grammar at the expense of the vocabulary and in most cases teachers use the learners' native language to explain the rules of grammar ,so students learn by rote these rules and get under false impression that they are learning the language ,but actually they are not able to give a single correct utterance, simply because they are not adequately exposed to the target language . It is true to say the more the learners are exposed to the target language through listening or /and reading the better they become at it and the more they listen the more their ears get trained and they will be able to practice what they hear and as it is said practice makes perfect, therefore teaching grammar through the old method ( grammar translation method) deprives the students of learning opportunities and such practice can be likened to teaching traffic laws to someone who doesn’t own a car, so he doesn’t know how and where to apply these laws. I don’t say that we don’t need to teach grammar ,saying thist is like saying you can have a chicken walking around without bones ,but what is the use of bones without flesh and soul? .Grammar is a set of rules that help us put together words and phrases to make correct sentences and utterances .This means grammar rules were made to organize something already exists, but if nothing exists, on what do students apply these rules
Finally I can come up with the conclusion that the situation stays the same unless grammar is taught through situations and contexts along with boosting and building up vocabulary and avoiding as much as possible the use of the students' mother tongue because keeping to the target language is a good practice for them
